Gary has been a litigator for about 30 years and currently is a member of the firm’s Litigation and Advocacy, Alternative Dispute Resolution and Insurance Practice Groups. His practice focuses on tort claims, commercial disputes and insurance disputes.

He is experienced civil trial and appellate counsel in the litigation of negligence, breach of contract, product liability, insurance, insolvency, trust claims, business torts and competition law cases.

Gary is experienced in working cooperatively with corporate legal and risk management personnel in the defence of claims. He has participated extensively in private mediation and the courts’ judicial dispute resolution processes.

Gary has litigated a number of cases to trial and appeal. Most cases settle without any court appearance and many routine court appearances are unrecorded. However, some proceed to court and result in publicly reported court judgments that may set legal precedents.

Gary has been counsel representing clients in over 50 publicly reported court judgments in Alberta and the Northwest Territories.

Disputes that lead to civil litigation have varying issues between the parties and varying intensities of emotional involvement by the parties. Gary has had extensive experience with private mediation of disputes and the judicial dispute resolution process for lawsuits prior to trial. He also has been counsel during the pre-trial, trial and appeal processes in disputes between parties where settlement was never a viable option. As a result, he has broad experience of the alternative paths to dispute resolution.
