The oil reserves found in the Alberta tar sands (now referred to in Canada as "oil sands") are second only to the reserves of Saudi Arabia, with an estimated 1.7 to 2.5 trillion barrels in place, and recoverable reserves in the range of 174 billion barrels. They are contained in three major areas beneath 54,000 square miles of Northeastern Alberta, an area the size of the state of New York. To date, only about two percent of the initial established resource has been produced.
