Different measures may be put in place to ensure long term protection, or “conservation” of ecologically sensitive land from development. The goal of any such measure is to ensure that conservation of the land is “hard-wired”, by legally enforceable means, and will survive the sale or transfer of the land to successive generations.
Conservation measures can be public or private. Public measures are imposed by a governmental authority, such as a municipality. Private measures are arranged between private landowners or between a private landowner and a non-governmental conservation agency.
