Author(s): Coulter, Catherine
Date:  January 1 2006
The past year has brought with it a significant number of decisions from the Privacy Commissioner of Canada and her counterparts in Alberta and British Columbia.  With their responsibility for legal compliance on a number of fronts within the corporation, corporate counsel need to be aware of important directives recently made in areas such as the type of personal information that can be disclosed in the context of an acquisition, the ability of a company to have video or internet surveillance of its employees and the steps that must be taken by companies using a foreign third party service provider.

The past year has also brought with it a significant number of employment law decisions which may have an impact on day to day business practice.  Again, with their responsibility for legal compliance on a number of fronts within the corporation, corporate counsel need to be aware of important directives recently made in areas such as fixed-term employment contracts, terminating individuals who are under a disability and with cause terminations.
