Cross Border Travel with Digital Devices

Travelling with a laptop computer, BlackBerry, digital camera and MP3 player is common place among those who travel for business and pleasure alike.  However, most travellers are not aware that the Customs Act grants wide powers of search to Canadian border officials, which includes the power to search the information stored on digital devices.  American border officials are also empowered to search computers and other digital devices at border crossings.  So, how should employees and others ensure the confidentiality of their information when travelling between Canada and the US for business purposes?  This article will address some of the common pit-falls and strategies for how to avoid them.
