6th Annual National Forum on Litigating Class Actions – Bringing and Defending Class Actions in Canada

Some of the younger participants in attendance at this conference may be surprised to learn that Québec was the first Canadian province to adopt class action procedural rules in 1978, under the Parti Québécois government headed by René Lévesque. The laudable policy objectives of promoting and favouring access to justice, as well as the more efficient enforcement of social and remedial legislation, were at the forefront, when Québec adopted its streamlined version of U.S. Federal Rule 23 pertaining to the certification of class actions.
