Tamela J. Coates LL.B., Managing Partner, Calgary

Tamela (Tammy) Coates is Managing Partner of the Calgary office of Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP ("FMC"). Tammy was called to the Bar in 1989 and has spent her career with FMC (Calgary). She has practised in the areas of commercial litigation and dispute resolution, with a focus on energy, environmental and IP disputes.

She has appeared before all levels of the Alberta Courts, as well as the B.C. Supreme Court and the Federal Court of Canada. She is frequently called upon to speak and present on topics related to advocacy, principled negotiation and mediation, and litigation practice (both within the firm and to other members of the Bar). She also routinely provides counsel to charities on a volunteer basis.

Tammy has extensive experience acting as counsel to numerous major energy companies with respect to landowner claims regarding water, soil, vegetation, and air contamination, including media and reputation management. She has also been retained to remedy issues regarding freehold leases, purchase and sale, operating, pooling, split title, and production disputes in addition to a variety of commercial disputes in insolvency situations, patent claims and misappropriation of intellectual property.

Tammy has acted as counsel to a major Canadian telecommunications company in a variety of commercial, corporate, and telecommunications related disputes, including corporate shareholding disclosure, facility and network placement, advertising and other publications, and class actions. She has also acted as counsel to an international wind development company and local developer in a commercial sale dispute and corollary dispute regarding connection rights to the provincial power grid.

Tammy has been recommended by Chambers Global: The Guide to the World's Leading Lawyers for Business 2012 as a leading lawyer in the area of Dispute Resolution: Alberta. She was also selected as one of Calgary’s "Top 40 Under 40" for 2004/2005 by Calgary Inc. Magazine. She has authored "Commercial Arbitration and the Canadian Justice System: Recent Decisions of the Supreme Court of Canada", GAR Arbitration Review of the Americas 2012, November 2011.
