OVERVIEW EXPERTISE MORE ABOUT PETER
Peter joined FMC as a summer student in 2004, then returned for his articles in 2005 and is now practising as a litigation lawyer with the firm’s Commercial Litigation department and Construction Group. Peter’s practice focuses primarily on Construction Law, and his construction experience includes a combination of litigation and solicitor’s work. He has worked on a variety of builders’ lien and collection matters, tendering and commercial lease disputes and other types of construction litigation and has represented owners, contractors and subcontractors in this regard. He has also engaged in construction and procurement contract negotiation and drafting for owners on large commercial projects.

Peter was seconded to an oil sands owner on a part-time basis in 2006 and 2007. His primary responsibility during this time was to implement a series of broad changes to the client’s construction-related agreements (EPC, EPCM, Single/Multiple Use Construction, Major Purchase, Transportation, Site Access, Hazardous Waste Disposal, etc.) and to verify internal consistency and proper allocation of risk and responsibility within this set of contracts. He also engaged in the negotiation, drafting and revision of contracts with the client’s contractors and suppliers and performed research on a number of construction-related issues, including the interpretation of terms in construction contracts, the bidding and tendering process and the coverage and exclusions of the various types of insurance policies employed in the course of a construction project.

Apart from his construction experience, Peter also has experience with a wide variety of commercial and general litigation matters, including motor vehicle cases, estate litigation and land contamination disputes. He is also a member of the firm’s student recruitment committee responsible for the summer and articling student hiring process for FMC’s Calgary Office and a member of the Calgary Office’s Associate Committee.
