PROFESSIONAL RESPONSIBILITY PRACTICE

Gerry has made numerous representations in professional liability matters at the behest of the Law Society of Alberta and its professional liability insurers. He has acted for virtually all of the major firms in Alberta, and literally dozens of lawyers, in defending allegations of professional negligence, conflict of interest and breach of professional obligations.

COMMERCIAL PRACTICE

  • Counsel to a major Alberta energy resource consortium in complex civil litigation requiring over two years of trial and resulting in a very favourable mediated settlement at the end of the plaintiff’s case
  • Counsel to major energy companies on matters involving contract interpretation and tort claims
  • Counsel to several pipeline companies relating to court appearances on valuation issues and injunctive relief
  • Representation on behalf of energy companies before the Alberta Court of Appeal and the Federal Court of Canada relating to judicial review of regulatory and administrative decisions
  • Counsel before all levels of Courts in Alberta, together with appearances before regulatory tribunals, including the governing bodies of professional associations
  • Counsel to employers and employees, respecting employment law matters
  • Acted for insurers under a variety of coverages, and occasionally insureds, in defence of claims and coverage issues
Representative Work
Conducted a five week medical malpractice trial in the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta, in an action pursued against a number of physicians and the hospital administration
Acting for a major energy company in relation to a significant incident involving losses exceeding $1 billion
Acting for Petro-Canada in defence of a $120 million claim brought by Enron Canada arising under gas sales agreements
Representation on behalf of energy companies before Alberta Court of Appeal and Supreme Court of Canada relating to judicial review of regulatory and administrative decisions
Two day course in mediation offered by the Alberta Arbitration and Mediations Society
