FMC’s Director of Professional Resources Kara Sutherland shares some interview advice for eager new law students in Canadian Lawyer 4Students
November 27 2009 - Toronto

Law students work hard for the chance to interview with a big legal firm, but when the time finally does arrive, it can be very nerve racking, even for the most confident future lawyer.

Kara Sutherland, Director of Professional Resources at Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP (FMC) says that when it comes time to hire law students, FMC looks for a few specific traits.

“We are looking for students who have a demonstrated interest in business law who are engaged by their environment, and who are creative thinkers with exceptionally good judgement,” says Kara.

Possessing those characteristics can only take you so far however, you have to be able to illustrate through interview questions why you belong with the firm. In addition, be prepared to ask questions yourself.

Kara suggests taking the time to reflect on your career goals and what you would like out of the firm before shaping your questions.

“Students should not ask questions regarding information that is available on the firm’s website, but rather use the interviews as a means of determining if the work experience being offered aligns with their goals and personality,” she says.

Showing interest and researching the firm is another big plus if you want to differentiate yourself from the pack.
