FMC Partner John Goetz in the Legal Post about the rise of cleantech law in business

November 27 2009 - Calgary
The cleantech industry has become big business for law firms. Also known as greentech, it is comprised of companies focused on renewable energy, aiming to reduce energy costs and negative environmental impacts.

"Cleantech is the new gold rush for business," says John Goetz, a partner at Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP (FMC) in Calgary. Law firms have caught on to the fast growing cleantech enterprise and are offering the legal tools necessary for a variety of cleantech project. "We have a host of practice groups involved from cradle to grave in cleantech projects," he adds.

FMC was recently involved in a number of wind power projects, producing mandates and potential mandates in land acquisition and leasing, construction issues, regulatory and environmental permits among other tasks.

In the U.S., green energy initiatives remain a big priority, and Canada is starting to follow suit evidenced by the Ontario Green Energy Act.

"Finally, we’re starting to see the rubber hitting the road," says John.
