FMC takes concrete measures to encourage diversity and a work-life balance

April 23 2008
For Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP (FMC), the advantages of promoting inclusiveness in the workplace are numerous. Michel Brunet, Chair and CEO, emphasizes the importance of encouraging diversity and a work-life balance in the retention of talent and in client relations (particularly with American companies).

"It is a competitive advantage to encourage diversity in our team," says Michel. Lawyers and staff are more likely to stay with a firm that favours diversity, respects people's differences and offers an inclusive work environment.

Michel also points out that clients who value diversity in their own workplaces are beginning to demand information on diversity policy from their service providers. "Many large American companies have decided to retain the services of firms who seriously encourage diversity in their workplaces," he says. These values are starting to spread to Canada, and firms beginning to see requests for information on diversity initiatives in RFPs.

FMC has taken several steps to embrace diversity and a work-life balance as part of the firm's culture. A formal Diversity Committee, scholarships for visible minorities, child-care options for lawyers and staff, and new technology to allow firm members to work from home are all part of the firm's effort.
