Meet Alex MacWilliam, the green-collar worker

August 25 2008
While some may see increased environmental legislation as a threat to business, many professionals are embracing it as an opportunity. In the legal world, environmental issues are an ever-growing component of major deals, especially in the province of Alberta. "Nowadays, when companies go to raise capital, the market wants to know how they plan to deal with these concerns," says Alex MacWilliam, head of FMC's National Environmental Law Group.

Alex is one of an increasing number of professionals in Alberta who are focused on protecting the environment as part of their jobs. "I'm certainly aware of what [humans] do to the environment. I understand the need for development, but I want to see it done in an environmentally conscious way," says Alex. "I like to think that I assist [our clients] in their efforts to be good environmental stewards."

James Stevenson and Jim Veenbaas feature Alex as one of Alberta's "green-collar workers" in their cover story, "Welcome to the Green Economy" (Alberta Venture, August 2008, pgs. 30-37).
