Mediacorp Canada Inc., a Toronto-based publisher of employment-related periodicals, in partnership with BMO Financial Group and TWI Inc., selected the Greater Toronto's Top Employers 2012 based on the assessment of each employer’s operations and human resources practices. These criteria included:
- Physical workplace;
- Work atmosphere and “social” dimensions, described as the overall culture, including organized events;
- Health, financial and family benefits;
- Vacation and time off;
- Employee communications, which refers to the company’s procedures to communicate and get feedback from employees;
- Performance management, including performance reviews, recognition and rewards;
- Training and skills development; and
- Community involvement.
“It is an honour to be named one of the GTA’s top employers for 2012, alongside these other prestigious organizations,” said Chris Pinnington, Chief Executive Officer, FMC. “At FMC, we recognize that we achieve excellence in our commitment to client service and provide our clients with the greatest value with a team which is enthusiastically committed to FMC and our clients. As a result, our commitment to the professional and personal development of our people and supporting them to achieve their career aspirations is central to our strategy.”
FMC has numerous employee-focused programs within the firm, including:
-
Leave 4 Change: an innovative initiative of Uniterra that allows employees from FMC to turn part of their annual leave into a volunteer assignment in a developing country, donating their time and expertise to a partner organization. FMC is the first Canadian law firm to take part in this type of program.
-
FMC “15 Minutes for Our Future” Engagement and Inclusion Survey: with this survey, FMC became the first Canadian law firm to ask its people to self-identify based on personal characteristics. In asking these questions, the firm’s goal was to learn more about firm members and their experience at FMC. The results of the survey are being used to develop a consistent experience across the firm nationally.
-
Training and Education in Diversity and Inclusion: working with an external diversity consultant, FMC created its Boot Camp for Diversity and Inclusion, a program designed to educate all firm members with hiring, promotion and compensation responsibilities at the firm. The program educates participants on what diversity is, the business case for diversity, and how to become a diversity champion. An important part of the program is its inclusion of a working session where participants openly express their thoughts and ideas of what FMC and each individual participant might do to better achieve the firm’s collective diversity and inclusion goals.
“We are committed to designing and executing programs that engage and inspire firm members, such as Leave for Change and our diversity and inclusion programs,” said Mike Kaplan, Managing Partner, FMC Toronto. “The Greater Toronto's Top Employers 2012 recognition proves that our programs have been successful so far, and challenges us to provide innovative solutions to improving the quality of our employees’ work experience, making FMC a workplace of choice.”
