Fraser Milner Casgrain LLP (FMC), one of Canada’s leading business and litigation law firms, is proud to announce that it has been honoured as one of the Best Employers for New Canadians for the third consecutive year.
The Best Employers for New Canadians award recognizes FMC’s leadership role in delivering effective workplace programs, including internal coaching and mentoring, to assist newcomers to Canada in developing successful professional careers in this country. The award is managed by Mediacorp Canada Inc., a Toronto-based publisher of employment-related periodicals. Mediacorp selected the top 40 employers based on a number of specific criteria evaluating these organizations’ initiatives aimed at assisting newcomers to Canada.
“I am delighted that FMC has been recognized as one of the Best Employers for New Canadians for the third year in a row,” says Chris Pinnington, FMC’s Chief Executive Officer. “At FMC, we are proud that our people reflect a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives, which contribute to the excellence of our team and our client service.”
Specific FMC initiatives recognized by the award include:
- Establishing the FMC Legal Professional Internship which provides hands-on experience to a foreign-trained lawyer new to Canada through a six-month paid position with the firm – the first program of its kind in Canada.
- First law firm corporate partner of the Toronto Region Immigrant Employment Council (TRIEC) Mentoring Partnership program.
- Establishing a resume and interview workshop for TRIEC mentees, which includes resume creation, interview tips and additional information to assist mentees with employment.
- First corporate partner of the University of Toronto’s Internationally-Trained Lawyer Program.
- Providing a six-week unpaid cooperative placement to successful participants of the St. Stephen's Community House Employment and Training Centre Connections.
“At FMC, embracing diversity in an inclusive team environment is critical to attracting and retaining top talent in our industry,” says Kate Broer, FMC Partner and Co-chair of FMC’s National Diversity and Inclusion Initiative. “We strive to find opportunities for all firm members to embrace their unique backgrounds and perspectives and to create opportunities for newcomers to Canada who have the drive, talent and skills to succeed, but have limited Canadian work experience. We are committed to helping them build a bright professional future in Canada."
