Evelyn Ackah is a Partner in FMC's Calgary office and the head of FMC's Business Immigration Law Practice Group. Her practice focuses exclusively in the area of Canadian and US Business immigration law. She provides her expertise to corporate clients in the development and implementation of immigration strategies to secure desired business objectives. Evelyn is also a member of the firm’s Employment and Labour group, and provides strategic advice to clients on immigration matters involving employee mobility and relocation.
Evelyn assists multinational corporations with Canadian and US immigration and citizenship law, establishment of new businesses and cross-border business travel, in order to facilitate employment, business development or foreign investment. She regularly provides written and oral submissions to embassies, high commissions and consulates throughout Canada, the US and visa posts throughout the world. In addition, she prepares and submits immigration applications pursuant to NAFTA, GATS and the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. Evelyn also counsels clients on related issues involving personal tax, customs, social security, social insurance, health insurance and passports. She has assisted with the preparation of applications for business visas and work permits for the United Kingdom, Australia, Asia and EU countries. More recently, Evelyn has developed an expertise in cross-border privacy issues, ITAR - International Traffic in Arms regulations and deemed exports of controlled technologies.
Evelyn helps clients understand the ever-changing immigration laws and regulations so that they can utilize practical and proactive solutions to meet their human resource needs in a timely manner. She works closely with her corporate clients to learn about their unique businesses and the challenges they face, in order to provide them with informed and effective advice.
Prior to specializing in the area of business immigration law, Evelyn practiced corporate/commercial law for three years. This allows her to bring additional expertise to clients who are considering establishing new corporate entities or making investments in Canada or the United States.
Evelyn has provided immigration advice to large financial institutions, international corporations and global recruitment organizations over her years of practice. She is a frequent speaker at conferences and seminars across the country on a variety of immigration and citizenship legal issues. She has contributed articles to Lawyers Weekly, the Human Resources Professionals Magazine and the Globe and Mail. She has also been featured on ROB/Workopolis TV, CTV Newsnet, CP 24 and Business News Network to discuss Canadian and US immigration issues.
