SUMMERING WITH US

We have designed our summer program carefully in order to facilitate the transition from law school to legal practice, and to provide you with the best learning experience available. You will work on real files, with real clients, and will be given real responsibilities. As a summer student, you will participate in two consecutive rotations and may choose from the following options: Corporate/Securities, Financial Services, Litigation, Employment and Pensions, Commercial Real Estate and Tax. Both an associate and a partner mentor will be assigned to you in each rotation.

Your mentors will be responsible for helping you meet lawyers in the department and for monitoring your workflow. They will ensure that you have an appropriate amount of work, and that you are exposed to a variety of matters during the course of the rotation. They will also assist you in accessing work in particular areas, if you have specific interests.

Second-year summer students who spent their first summer at the firm are also eligible for a secondment to a client’s office or a government agency such as the Ontario Securities Commission. These secondment opportunities will be carefully matched to your specific interests.

In addition, we have an in-house shadowing program, whereby our students spend the day with a client or an FMC alumnus who is working as in-house counsel. Students appreciate the opportunity to learn about the role of in-house lawyers and the business environment within which they operate.

We generally hire between 15 and 20 first- and second-year summer students annually.
